About the book:

House of Spines front.jpeg

Ran McGhie’s world has been turned upside down. A young, lonely and frustrated writer, and suffering from mental-health problems, he discovers that his long-dead mother was related to one of Glasgow’s oldest merchant families. Not only that, but Ran has inherited Newton Hall, a vast mansion that belonged to his great-uncle, who appears to have been watching from afar as his estranged great-nephew has grown up. Entering his new-found home, he finds that Great-Uncle Fitzpatrick has turned it into a temple to the written word – the perfect place for poet Ran. But everything is not as it seems. As he explores the Hall’s endless corridors, Ran’s grasp on reality appears to be loosening. And then he comes across an ancient lift; and in that lift a mirror. And in the mirror … the reflection of a woman …

Well, a stone thrown by a catapult. He has published over 200 poems in literary magazines throughout the UK, including New Writing Scotland, Poetry Scotland and Markings. His career as a poet has also included a (very) brief stint as the Poet-In- Residence for an adult gift shop. Blood Tears, his bestselling debut novel won the Pitlochry Prize (judge: Alex Gray) from the Scottish Association of Writers. Other published work includes: Carnegie’s Call (a non-fiction work about successful modern-day Scots); A Taste for Malice; The Guillotine Choice; Beyond the Rage and The Bad Samaritan. His psychological thriller, A Suitable Lie, was a number one bestseller. Michael is a regular reviewer for the hugely popular crime fiction website http://www.crimesquad.com. 1. This book sounds very interesting! Not probably something I would normally read as I’m a thriller junkie but I have been open to trying new books at the moment and have been loving them!! Maybe this could be my next 😀

  2. some fabulous reviews about this book.. I wasn’t lucky enough to be on the blog tour and really want to read it x

  3. I have to admit that I first was intrigued by this one because of the title. And I kept reading all the tour posts because it sounds oddly fascinating. I do hope to read this one at some point. Arrrr!
    x The Captain

  4. I would love to receive a copy of this. I haven’t yet read a book published by Orenda that wasn’t satisfying. Thanks

  5. I have it bookmarked. It all started with “Jihadi”, then “The Mountain in My Shoe”, then “In Her Wake, followed by “How to Be Brave”, and most recently “Six Stories”. I loved them all. “Maria in the Moon” at the top of my TBR now.

  6. I love the sound of this book. The cover and title is brilliant with the idea of the lift and house of bookish-ness, all very interesting and a tad creepy.
    Thanks for a great giveaway
