Blog Tour: Mine by Clare Empson

Hi everyone,

Today. Ellen is taking part in the blog tour for Mine by Clare Empson and I’ll be sharing her review with you all.

About the author:

Clare Empson

Clare Empson is a journalist with a background in national newspapers and has worked as a small business editor, finance correspondent and fashion at the Mail on Sunday and the Daily Express. Clare freelances for The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times, the Evening Standard and Tatler amongst others. She currently works as editor/founder of experiential lifestyle website Him is her debut novel. Her second novel Mine is an exploration of the fraught relationship between a birth mother and her adopted son set against a backdrop of a passionate love affair in the 70s.

About the book:

On the surface, Luke and his girlfriend Hannah seem to have a perfect life. He’s an A&R man, she’s an arts correspondent and they are devoted to their new-born son Samuel.

But beneath the gloss Luke has always felt like an outsider. So when he finds his birth mother Alice, the instant connection with her is a little like falling in love.

When Hannah goes back to work, Luke asks Alice to look after their son. But Alice – fuelled with grief from when her baby was taken from her 27 years ago – starts to fall in love with Samuel. And Luke won’t settle for his mother pushing him aside once again…

Ellen’s Review:

Bear with me while I pick up the pieces of MY SHATTERED HEART!! The author has done it again and written another novel that has burrowed itself deep into my heart and soul, ripped them apart and left me broken. It has taken me weeks to write this review as I simply don’t have the words to do the book justice.

Luke and Hannah have the perfect life which is topped off with the birth of their son Samuel. Having a child of his own encourages Luke to contact and meet his birth mother Alice who abandoned him 27 years ago. There is an instant connection between Luke and Alice and their relationship quickly develops, so much so that Alice becomes the carer for baby Samuel when Hannah has to return to work. It is obvious that Alice is besotted with Samuel while seemingly not so with Luke which leads to some jealousy.

The chapters of Mine are headed with a little psychology information on the relationship/feelings between an adopted child and their birth parents which was really insightful. I wasn’t adopted but raised by a grandparent in my early years and could definitely recognise the emotions.

Throughout the book we are taken back to Alice’s younger days and the reasons behind her decision. I loved this, the food, music, locations brought everything to life for me (and left me with a hankering for seafood and Pink Floyd!). Nothing is as straightforward as it seems and as more of Alice’s past is revealed the tension intensifies.

I am in awe of this author – Mine is so much more than a psychological thriller. It is a highly emotional exploration of family ties and true love and one that will stay on my mind for a long time.
