About the book:

Murder-Game-Kindle

A serial killer is playing a terrifying game of life or death with his victims. After he captures them, a countdown begins. He marks the time by sending clues to the whereabouts of the women he has taken in three disturbing images: alive, tortured, dead.

In a race against the clock, East London Detective Ruby Preston must play the twisted killer’s terrifying murder game and decipher the clues before more women die…

But this isn’t the first time the police have seen such a sickening crime. The notorious Lonely Hearts Killer, Mason Gatley, was put behind bars ten years ago for murdering six women in exactly the same chilling way. Desperate for more information, Ruby persuades her boyfriend, Nathan Crosby, to use his criminal connections to set up a dangerous meeting. Because to catch this killer, she needs to think like one…

But the closer Ruby grows to the dark and charming Mason Gatley, the more worried her team become. Is Mason really helping her catch the killer? Or is he lining Ruby up to be his next victim?

Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Peter James will be hooked by this dark and utterly disturbing thriller, packed with twists until the final page.

My thoughts:

Having read and really enjoyed the first two books in this series, I was delighted to be able to read Murder Game for the blitz. It was great to be able to catch up with Ruby and her team following the events in Sleep Tight!

Murder Game is another excellent installment in the series. In this book, a killer is on the loose, kidnapping their victims and leaving clues for the police to try and decipher. The caveat is that they are against the clock, and the clues are gruesome reminders that if they aren’t fast enough, the victim dies.

Another disturbing fact is the killer seems to be emanating another killer from years before, Mason Gatley. But he is in prison. So Ruby has to try and glean some information from this sadistic killer before its too late. This makes for some very uncomfortable prison scenes as she tries to figure out just what exactly is going on.

Murder Game is a very clever game of cat and mouse. It’s definitely the best Ruby Preston book, in my opinion. The team is tighter, the characters are really well fleshed out, and the crimes are gory as hell. I raced through this one because I was eager to see where Caroline Mitchell would take us on her twisted journey into the mind of a killer.

Safe to say I really enjoyed this one! Highly recommended! 🙂

My thoughts:

Having read and loved the first book in this series, Love You To Death, I was more than a little excited to be able to read a super secret early copy of Sleep Tight. I love nothing more than a good series, and I’m always afraid with the follow ups that they won’t live up to their predecessor, but hey, it’s Caroline Mitchell, it was always going to be brilliant!

We’re back with Ruby Preston and her team in Sleep Tight. Upon the discovery of a young woman’s body in a cemetery, the team are thrown into the twisted mind of a killer who will stop at nothing to stage his scenes. Recreating fairytale princesses, the killer mutilates his victims to look like specific characters from the old fairy stories, and leaves their bodies in plain sight to be discovered.

What follows is a thrilling and fast paced story, with an excellent ensemble cast of characters from the previous book, along with my favourite, Nathan Crosby. Crosby is Ruby’s lover (hate that word 😂), and the killer has implicated him in the murder of one of his victims. Upon discovery of incriminating evidence in his home, Crosby becomes the prime suspect. Ruby is convinced he’s not the killer, and she goes rogue to try and prove her theory.

The killer in this book is as twisted as the plot, which will definitely keep the reader on their toes. There are so many different threads and leads to follow, but the author does a great job of keeping it accessible for the reader. I’m not going to go any further into the plot, sufficed to say I wasn’t expecting Sleep Tight to sneak up and grab me, but that’s exactly what it did!

An excellent second installment in a series that could run and run. Sleep Tight is a brilliant, tense and gripping read. I blasted through the pages towards the end, I could not put it down.

Highly recommended!

Make sure to keep up with the blog tour:

About the book:

To Rebecca it was a brave decision that led to her freedom from domestic abuse. To Solomon it was the ultimate betrayal.

It’s been ten years since Rebecca’s testimony saw Solomon locked away. Enough time for the nightmares to recede, the nerves to relax; enough time to rebuild her life and put the past behind her.

Then one day a phone rings in her bedroom—but it’s not her phone. Solomon has been in her home, and has a very simple message for her: for each of the ten years he has spent in jail, Rebecca must witness a crime. And, to make matters worse, she has to choose the victims.

Fail to respond and you get hurt. Talk to police and you die. Ready to play? You have sixty seconds to decide…

As the crimes grow more severe, the victims closer to home, Rebecca is forced to confront a past she had hoped was gone forever.

My thoughts:

I’m not going to lie, it took me weeks to read Witness. NOT because I didn’t like it, but because I had a ton of other books on the go as well so I didn’t get to read Witness in solid sittings! However, that did not stop my enjoyment of the book at all.

Witness is a stunning book. A study on how sociopathic people can live among us and nobody is any the wiser until it’s too late. Filled with loathsome acts, with a very twisted antagonist, it’s definitely a book that will unnerve you.

Reminiscent of Elizabeth Haynes’ Into The Darkest Corner with regards its treatment of all-consuming relationships and the havoc they can wreak, Witness is a very clever psychological thriller.

Caroline Mitchell has done an excellent job of delving into the psyche of a sociopath, furnishing the reader with all manner of horrendous thoughts from their mind. It is creepy, chilling and completely enthralling to read.

I cannot recommend Witness highly enough. Full of devastation and carnage, with a very intriguing premise, it’s definitely one to add to your list! Especially with today being Christmas. Go on, treat yourself… you won’t regret it! 😉📚

My thoughts:

I’m a huge fan of Caroline Mitchell’s books so I was super excited to hear there was a new series coming out. Naturally I jumped at the chance to read and review. I’ve read all bar Paranormal Intruder (I’m a scaredy cat and it’s real life people!!!!!) so I couldn’t wait to get stuck in to Love You To Death.

This is the first book in the DS Ruby Preston series and I genuinely can’t wait to read more about Ruby because she’s an excellent character. Real, raw and utterly relatable, she has the makings of becoming a new favourite character for me.

The story in Love You to Death revolves around women who had given up a child for adoption and are ending up dead. Why them? What’s the connection? Who’s next?

What follows is a game of cat and mouse between Ruby and the killer. But there is so much more to this story. Ruby has her own issues from the past, and they are threatening to come to the surface and collide with the investigation which would have terrifying consequences.

I absolutely loved the characterisation in Love You To Death. There are some superb characters in there, with Ruby being a shining example. Special mention goes one of the creepiest antagonists I’ve seen in a while. Lads, children are scary, and no more so when they’re unhinged and not what they seem to be. There’s an almost Stephen King-ish vibe in Love You To Death thanks to this, and it made my skin crawl more than once. Kudos to Caroline Mitchell for managing to freak me out with a crime book 😱

Love You To Death also deals with adoption, which isn’t usually something you read about in crime books. Fostering is usually more prevalent so it was interesting to see it used in here. Adoption can be a tricky subject, especially if you throw in a murderer hell bent on retribution into the mix. I’m adopted, so oddly enough I could empathise on a basic level, at certain points in the novel (No, I’m not a psychopath!!! 😂). Adoption is a very personal thing, and I though it was dealt with really well throughout the novel.

So yeah, massively loved this one. A new, fresh and exciting start to a series. And knowing Caroline’s work, a series that will only keep on improving with each book! So keep them coming lady!!! 😉

The Silent Twin by Caroline Mitchell Blog Tour

Hi Everyone,

Today is my stop on The Silent Twin blog tour and I’m so excited as I’ve been sitting on my review for a few weeks now! Super frustrating when all you want to do is RAAAAAAAAAAAVE about a book! 🙂

The Silent Twin is Caroline Mitchell’s 3rd DC Jennifer Knight book and it is absolutely brilliant! I’ve read, reviewed and loved the first two books in the series so I’m not surprised that The Silent Twin is equally as good as its predecessors.

You can read my reviews for the previous books by clicking on the relevant titles below:

And now onto matters at hand… 🙂

THE SILENT TWIN BY CAROLINE MITCHELL

The Silent Twin

About the book (via Goodreads):

I’m alone in the dark, please can you find me …

Nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia vow never to be parted. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight must find her before it’s too late.

Twin sister Olivia has been mute since Abigail’s disappearance. But when she whispers in Jennifer’s ear, Jennifer realises it is Abigail’s voice pleading to be found.

A damp and decaying house set in acres of desolate scrubland, the farm is a place of secrets, old and new – and Jennifer must unravel them all in order to find the lost girl. But could Olivia’s bond with her twin hold the key to finding Abigail? And can Jennifer break through her silence in time to save her sister’s life?

My thoughts:

I loved The Silent Twin and I was hooked immediately. It kept me reading late into the night, and as usual, had me jumping out of my skin every time I heard a noise in our house. I’m certain Caroline’s books are the only ones I’ve read that make me feel infinitely creeped out for the duration of reading!!! This feeling increases with each book, as the DC Jennifer Knight series is going from strength to strength.

The tension in the book is palpable right from the outset all the way as it races to a gut clenching finale. I read The Silent Twin in a handful of sittings, so much happens quickly and I just couldn’t stop once I picked it up!!!

The Silent Twin is a book about a missing child, Abigail, who disappeared wile playing hide and seek with her sister on the family farm. The subsequent investigation races at breakneck speed to try and find Abigail. However, as with most families, secrets and lies threaten to derail the investigation at every opportunity.

I think Caroline Mitchell has done a superb job with this book. The characters are excellent, Joanna in particular was so well written, the plot flows brilliantly and the emotions The Silent Twin evoke are second to none. I love DC Knight as a character too, she’s a strong, intelligent woman who isn’t afraid to explore her vulnerability, especially in relation to her abilities as regards the paranormal.

The location in The Silent Twin was a superb addition to the narrative too. It provided an excellently chilling backdrop to a very tense story. It felt like the landscape was cold and unyielding, almost like the characters at times. It was perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Silent Twin, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book from Caroline Mitchell. I gave it an easy 5⭐️ on Goodreads. It’s out now (published by Bookouture) and you can purchase a copy by clicking the link below.

Time To Die by Caroline Mitchell

Well… Where do I begin?!
Time To Die is my fourth read for Bookouture Thriller Week, which ends today! I’ve already read and loved Caroline’s first DC Jennifer Knight book Don’t Turn Around, my review of which you can read here!

About the book:

Don’t ever cross his palm with silver.

He will reveal your most shameful secrets.

He will predict your death.

He is hiding a secret.

He is hiding a monster.

And all his predictions come true.

Investigating a series of chilling murders, Detective Jennifer Knight finds herself tracking a mysterious tarot card reader known only as The Raven.
As the death toll rises, Jennifer and her team build a picture of a serial killer on the edge of sanity, driven by dark forces. But these are not random killings. And the method behind the madness could be the most terrifying thing of all …
Especially when it seems the death of one of their own is on the cards.

My thoughts:

I loved Don’t Turn Around and I couldn’t see how Caroline could write a better book in the series. How wrong was I!!!! Time To Die is absolutely fantastic. It is full of suspense, mystery and some very chilling scenes.

I’m usually not creeped out when I read books, but to be honest for parts of this book I was glad the light was on and that my husband was next to me! 😂 Towards the end of the book in particular, when I started hearing random noises in our bedroom while I was finishing the book, my heart was pounding. I was genuinely freaked out.

The Raven is one of the eeriest characters I’ve come upon in books for a long time. The prophecies he relays to the intended victims all have roots in their past, and when he tells them their future they are almost incredulous. Much to his annoyance. The chapters in the mind of The Raven are some of the spookiest, most atmospheric pieces of writing I’ve read in a long time. I feel I should add I don’t read horror/suspense books normally so I don’t have a lot to compare it to but I was 100% freaked out by this book.

Caroline has a wonderful way of crafting her books to give the maximum impact when it comes to the final reveals. In my opinion, her twists are some of the best I’ve read in this type of writing genre. I would happily keep reading the DC Knight series for as long as Caroline writes them!

I thoroughly enjoyed Time To Die. I read it at every spare opportunity as I was dying to see what was going to happen to the characters. I admit if I stopped on a chapter in The Ravens voice I was more than a little apprehensive to pick up reading as I was afraid of what he would have to say for himself.

I remember watching Hitchcock’s The Birds when I was small (too small if you ask me!!!) and this book is its bookish equivalent in my opinion. The Birds in the movie are the villains, and I think birds are ominous at the best of times for me, so the Ravens really made me feel uneasy.

I’m really glad I got around to reading Time To Die. It was one book I won’t forget in a hurry, and you can be damn sure I won’t be making eye contact with birds any time soon!!! 😂😂😂

I gave Time To Die a well deserved 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads!

Happy reading! 😊📖
