Ellen’s Review:

The Forgotten is the final book in the Byrne Family trilogy (The Betrayed and The Broken being book #1 and #2) and as much as I’ve been desperate to read it there is also a pang of regret. This is the end of the road for this series and I’ve really enjoyed being on the journey from the beginning. I highly recommend reading all three to immerse yourself in the dark underworld of The Byrnes! I’ve always maintained that I’m not a fan of gangland books but Casey Kelleher forced me to make a 360 on this decision and in my opinion she is the Queen of this genre.

In The Forgotten Nancy Byrne is still the head of the lucrative family business but there are a lot of people that would like to see her topple and are jealous of her success. Faces from the past are watching, growing envious and desperate for a slice of Nancy’s glamourous life…whatever the danger. Now, I for one would not go poking about with the wasp’s nest that is Nancy Byrne, forget that! She is feared for a reason and you’d have to be a little bit dim, or a little unhinged to think you could get one over on her. Someone is daft enough to abduct Nancy’s precious daughter Scarlett and you can guarantee there will be hell to pay and blood shed when the culprit is found. We see Nancy at her most vulnerable but it brought to mind a quote from Agatha Christie: “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”

I loved reuniting with all the familiar faces and meeting some new characters – look out for a particularly dedicated nurse (she needs her own series!). A fantastic conclusion to the trilogy. I’m going to miss The Byrnes but can’t wait to see what’s next from Casey Kelleher.

About the book:

The-Broken-Kindle.jpg

They took her dad, but she won’t let them take her.

Nancy Byrne was the apple of her daddy’s eye. He might have been one of the most-feared gangsters in London, yet Jimmy Byrne idolised his little Nancy. But now Jimmy is dead, gunned down in cold blood – and Nancy vows to avenge his death.

She’s only twenty years old, but as the new head of the ruthless Byrne gang, running a lucrative world of drugs, sex and violence, she’s in over her head. Keeping her family together while her beloved grandma falls apart and her brother Daniel goes off the rails forces Nancy to grow up – fast.

But while Nancy takes the men on at their own game, there’s a greater danger hiding on the dark streets. Jimmy’s killer is on her trail – and will stop at nothing to shut her up.

Blood might be thicker than water, but soon, Nancy realises she can’t trust anyone. Not even her own family.

Especially her own family.

A gritty, gripping read full of shocking thrills and suspense – readers of Mandasue Heller, Martina Cole and Jessie Keane will be addicted until the very last page.

The Broken by Casey Kelleher

Ellen’s Review:

Having loved the first book in the series from Casey Kelleher, The Betrayed, I was excited to get my grabby hands on The Broken! I was totally wrapped up in the exploits of the Byrne family and couldn’t wait to get stuck in and find out what was going to happen next. Would Colleen finally grow that backbone? How would Joanie get by without her precious son Jimmy? Now that Nancy knew who her father’s killer was what would she do?

All my questions were answered and a few new ones were thrown in for good measure. The Byrne family have a new boss in Nancy and she takes no shiz from anyone. She is as hard and brutal as her father but wrapped in a glamourous package. Don’t let that front fool you – she is not one for getting her hands dirty but makes sure that justice is delivered and delivered with vicious results. You would not want to mess with this lady!

Her brother Danny is a different story; he would like to think he is his father’s carbon copy but he just doesn’t meet the mark. Far more willing to dabble in the dodgier side of the gangland dealings than his sister but slowly unravelling mentally which makes him a dangerous adversary. Truth is revealed and lies exposed in The Broken and they will blow your mind.

And Colleen, their poor mother who was beaten down in the first book? Well, it would appear that her and Joanie have made amends which was a surprising turn of events….yeah…saying no more but it’s the perfect story arc.

I loved this book and that can be taken as high praise as this wouldn’t normally be my genre of choice. Casey Kelleher has smashed through my misgivings and delivered another brain blowing, heart pounding book. I can’t wait for the final book in this series.

Five stars from me!

Ellen’s Review:

This gritty thriller starts with a punch and then the tension is carried on through until the last page. I am not usually a fan of this genre but the writing style caught me up into the lives of Colleen and Jimmy alongside their mothers Edel and Joanie. Although Jimmy is the top dog of crime in his local area I would say that Joanie held a lot of the power and was pulling the strings behind the scenes. This was made apparent after the events of Colleen and Jimmy’s marriage; Joanie’s behaviour is abhorrent, she is such a cow-bag and that is putting it politely!! It is obvious that no one would ever be good enough for her golden boy Jimmy and she is willing to go to any lengths to exert her power over her weaker willed daughter in law who has entered into this relationship without a clue about its dark heart.

I felt really sorry for Colleen as she slowly had her spirit stripped away by the Byrne family. It was awful to witness her heartbreak and mental breakdown and the thought that even her own flesh and blood thought nothing of her really got to me. Colleen seemed the polar opposite of Jimmy and I kept hoping that she would rediscover some of her old fire and fight back against the old battle-axe mother in law! Her own mother Edel was a delight to read even if her radar for a suitable suitor for her precious daughter was slightly off.

The Betrayed features a web of lies and deceit and at its centre sits the Byrne family weaving their own brand of truth and justice in the East End of London.  This is the first book of Casey Kelleher’s that I have read but I look forward to more, especially to find out what happens where this story ended. Four stars.
