About the book:

Leonard Howell’s worst nightmare has come true: his daughter Amy has been kidnapped. Not content with relying on the cops, Howell calls the only man he trusts to get her back.

Eddie Flynn knows what it’s like to lose a daughter and vows to bring Amy home safe. Once a con artist, now a hotshot criminal attorney, Flynn is no stranger to the shady New York underworld.

However, as he steps back into his old life, Flynn realizes that the rules of game have changed – and that he is being played. But who is pulling the strings? And is anyone in this twisted case telling the truth…?

My thoughts:

Regular readers on here will know two things:

A) I am a huge fan of series

B) I love a good legal thriller

So when I heard Steve Cavanagh’s The Liar was on its way, I was beyond excited as I read and LOVED the first two books in the Eddie Flynn series, The Defence and The Plea (those reviews are linked at the bottom of this post). The lovely folks at Orion sent me a proof copy, along with some yummy US chocolate and a lie detector machine, which you’ll have seen me do if you follow my blog on Facebook and Twitter! What a fun way to get bloggers interested in reading a book!

The Liar is without a doubt my favourite book of the series so far. It’s got an absolutely cracking plot, and is filled with the kind of characters I enjoy reading about. In this one, Eddie takes on Leonard Howell’s case. His daughter has been kidnapped, and Eddie knows only too well what horrors this entails as he has been through the same thing (that’s not a spoiler btw, it’s in the blurb!).

What follows is an epic game of cloak and dagger. The reader is kept as much in the dark as Eddie is, which makes it all the more fun as we learn things at the same time. From the outset, the tension crackles and it does not let up until the very end of The Liar. I found myself barrelling through the chapters, unable to put the book down until I reached the brilliant and gripping end. There isn’t a single bit of downtime in this book, so be prepared for an absolute rollercoaster of a read.

I love Eddie Flynn, I don’t hide it, I shout about it. He is one of my most favourite characters in recent years. There is something underdog-ish about him, something that makes the reader instantly root for him from the beginning. Beautifully flawed, yet it works in his favour. You shouldn’t underestimate Eddie Flynn. Ever!

I honestly cannot recommend The Liar highly enough. There aren’t enough superlatives in my vocabulary to vocalise how much I enjoy these books. Addictive, thrilling, massively fun, you won’t be disappointed picking up The Liar, or the previous two books either!!!

Highly, HIGHLY recommended!

Bring on the next one, Rogue Juror!!!!

I honestly think these two books will end up in my Top Books of the Year come December, they are just that good!!! 😊

About the book (via Goodreads):

Fraud. Blackmail. Murder. It’s all in a day’s work for Eddie Flynn.

For years, major New York law firm Harland & Sinton has operated a massive global fraud. The FBI are on to them, but they need witnesses to secure their case. When a major client of the firm, David Child, is arrested for murder, the FBI ask con-artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn to secure Child as his client and force him to testify against the firm.

Eddie’s not a man to be forced into representing a guilty client, but the FBI have incriminating files on Eddie’s wife, Christine, and if Eddie won’t play ball, she’ll pay the price.

When Eddie meets David Child he knows Child is innocent, despite the overwhelming evidence against him. With the FBI putting pressure on him to secure the plea, Eddie must find a way to prove Child’s innocence while keeping his wife out of danger – not just from the FBI, but from the firm itself.

My thoughts:

The Plea’s opening chapter is bang on!!! I started reading it as soon as it arrived in the door, and I honestly couldn’t put it down! I read it at every opportunity, which included reading it aloud to my 16 month old daughter because I had gotten to another great bit and didn’t want to stop reading it! πŸ˜‚

Eddie Flynn is fast becoming one of my favourite characters in books, he’s just, I don’t know, so hangdog yet loveable 😍

The Plea is an utterly brilliant thriller! I’m a sucker for a good courtroom drama, which The Plea has in spades, as well as plenty of danger from outside forces. There are also plenty of characters from The Defence getting name checked too. The Lizard has to be my favourite though! Kate likes The Lizard! (Please tell me someone will get that reference, Steve? Liz? πŸ˜‚)

Tasked with representing young billionaire David Child, who is accused of murder, Eddie has his work cut out for him as all the evidence points to Child being the killer. Mixed up in all of this thanks to Harland & Sinton, Christine, Eddie’s wife, becomes an unwitting pawn in the game between the FBI and Flynn. This makes the tension skyrocket as you find yourself invested in the entire story, willing the good guys to win, but who are the good guys?

Every so often, a book comes along that makes me giddy! I get all fidgety and excited about it, The Plea is one such book! After I finished it last night, I was just all eeeeeeeks and squeeeeeeees πŸ˜‚ I just cannot get the words out to accurately describe just how much I loved this book!

Everything about The Plea works! The plot, the characters, the legal and courtroom struggles and triumphs, it all just fits. From the first page, the reader is sucked right into Eddie Flynn’s world and everything that goes with it! There are some excellently shady characters, that make you grit your teeth and want to smack them about the head as they are just awful human beings!

Deception, fraud, murder. The Plea has it all, and as usual, Steve Cavanagh has written an absolute ripper of a novel! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ“–

I gave it 5⭐️ but I would have given it 100⭐️ if I could!!! 😍
