About the author:

Before turning to writing, Rachel Amphlett played guitar in bands, worked as a TV and film extra, dabbled in radio as a presenter and freelance producer for the BBC, and worked in publishing as a sub-editor and editorial assistant.

She now wields a pen instead of a plectrum and writes crime fiction and spy novels, including the Dan Taylor espionage novels and the Detective Kay Hunter series.

Ellen’s Review:

One of the highlights of my reading year is a new Kay Hunter book being published and having been a fan from the start I couldn’t wait to get started on Gone to Ground (Kay Hunter 6). The story opens in an innocuous manner with a leisurely cycle ride amongst a group of friends. The tone soon changes when one of the group find an abondoned boot….with a foot still in it! Thus begins a new case for Kay Hunter and her team. I have loved seeing this team grow closer as the series has progressed and once again they prove to be a well oiled machine of investigative work. Each knows their role and gets on with it and Kay is confortable to let them do so.

I have learnt that Rachel Amphlett is a master of misdirection and I did not predict where the story was going or who the culprit was! I get so engrossed in the story and it’s always a genuine suprise to me, the sign of an excellent writer in my opinion.

Of course it is not a Kay Hunter novel without her loving husband, Adam, and his unusual house guests – being a vet has resulted in some hilarious events in the Hunter household which are a welcome relief from the gory details of the murders. Another five star read and I look forward to book seven!

Ellen’s review:

Call to Arms is the fifth book in the Kay Hunter series and I have loved every single book. Kay goes from strength to strength in each novel and once more she barely gets a reprieve from her previous case before becoming embroiled in another. Kay is back at work after nearly being killed at the end of the last novel Hell to Pay. Again we see her hard working ethic and determination to be at work; it is obvious that she has returned too early from enforced sick leave and is on desk duty but this doesn’t stop Kay in her mission to solve a seemingly cold case. At first glance the investigation into the death of a local soldier in a motorbike accident appears straight forward but the deeper Kay goes the more secrets are revealed and the circle of suspects grows.

I love Kay’s relationship with her team; if she is working overtime/going above and beyond, they are right there by her side. Their loyalty and friendship has been great to watch grow. Also Kay’s partner Adam keeps her grounded and supplied with endless glasses of wine at the end of a gruelling day – I think my husband could do with a masterclass from Adam!!

I would definitely recommend reading books 1-4 before diving into Call to Arms as there is a narrative thread that runs throughout them all, plus why deprive yourself the pleasure of reading this fantastic series?! #allthestars for this book and once more I am waiting eagerly for the next!

Ellen’s Review:

Hell To Pay is the fourth in the Detective Kay Hunter series by Rachel Amphlett; as with the other books (Scared To Death, Will To Live and One to Watch) it could be read as a standalone but you should definitely read the whole series because they are awesome! Kay Hunter is one of my favourite characters in a series and each book has teased a little more about her past troubles, false accusations of misconduct and the tragic consequences of the stress she was placed under.

In Hell To Pay, Kay is on the trail of a serial killer who is exploiting vulnerable women. The investigation leads her to the man who wants her silenced and who has been behind the plot to destroy her career. I was gripped from the start and raced through the pages as Kay got closer to cracking the case and hopefully delivering justice to those that had wronged her. Kay’s nemesis exudes arrogance and is totally loathsome; my nerves were shredded for the last chapter.

The light relief in the book comes from Kay and Adam’s house guests Bonnie and Clyde, I always look forward to seeing what kind of patient Adam has brought home from work and this time it’s guinea pigs.

This book is a fast paced thriller and I guarantee once you’ve picked it up you’ll struggle to get anything else done until you finish it. Five stars from me and bring on book five!!

It’s no secret that I am a massive fan of the Kay Hunter series (and Rachel Amphlett). I was delighted to be given the opportunity to read and review the 3^rd in the series One to Watch. This could be read as a standalone but why deny yourself the pleasure of the first two; Scared to Death and Will to Live? Go get them all and dive in.

DS Kay Hunter is one of my favourite protagonists; she is the perfect paradigm of a police officer. Willing to go to any lengths to grill suspects even if that means she may face disciplinary action from her superiors. Underneath this resilient exterior Kay has a soft and vulnerable side. She is still obviously distraught over a personal loss as well as the thought that she may not be able to trust her team, some of who who she counts as close friends.

I really felt for the young victim of the story, 16yr old Sophie Whittaker. Found bludgeoned to death at her own “purity pledge” party, there were a number of likely suspects, none of who seemed particularly keen on participating in the enquiry process. It was unsettling to think that such a young woman would have so many people who would want her dead. There were tons of twists, turns and red herrings – all the ingredients for a winning police procedural.

I absolutely loved One to Watch and hereby award it #allthestars. I cannot wait for Kay Hunter #4 Hell to Pay later this year!

Ellen’s review:

I was delighted to be asked to review Will to Live, the second book in the Kay Hunter series as I had loved Scared to Death and couldn’t wait to catch up with Kay, her team and the guests that her veterinarian hubby brings home from work!

Will to Live certainly starts with a bang and then the tension gathers momentum as we try to work out who the killer is and what the next stop will be on their murderous journey. The murders are unique in that the killer is disguising them as suicides. The cold and calculating way in which the victims are dispatched is truly chilling; how would you feel if you came around from a drugged stupor to see a train barrelling towards you and there was no way of escape!?

Mental health and depression are a running theme throughout and dealt with very sensitively.

I enjoy these books as they are simple yet effective and engrossing. The cast of characters is minimal and there are no long, drawn out scenes which you find in some police procedurals/crime novels. There is a personal touch in this series; slowly we are getting to know Kay, her marriage, difficult relationship with her family, personal heartache and professional problems. More is revealed about the case that Kay was involved in previously and the backlash that she is still suffering from the events and accusations. As a reader we are still unsure over who she can trust and see that her own private investigations into the case result in consequences for Kay and her colleagues.

I can’t wait for the next in the series, Kay Hunter is a fab lead. She is caring and tenacious and I would love her as my BFF!
