Rapid Fire Book Tag

Hi everyone,

I haven’t done one of these posts in the longest time, and I want to find ways to keep my blog busy so I’ll be doing a few different bits and pieces in the coming weeks!

The original Rapid Fire Book Tag was posted by Girl Reading (watch here) a couple of years ago on You Tube, but I’m definitely not a vlogger so you’ll just have to read on for my answers 🙂

E-book or physical book?

I want to say physical book, but honestly, ebook is just so much easier to read. I can lie down and not have to worry about holding it up, and if I happen to fall asleep I won’t lose my page as the kindle will shut itself off after a little while.

Paperback or hardback?

To look at, I would definitely choose hardback. They are just so pretty. But for ease of use, and size, paperback actually wins this one.

Online or in-store shopping?

I love going in to a bookshop, so this one is kind of a no-brainer. I like to see the covers, and I really enjoy looking at shelves packed full of books. The kindle store just doesn’t have the same appeal as a bricks and mortar store.

Trilogies or series?

While I was still hooked on crime/thriller books, I would have easily said series. For the likes of Lee Child, Jonathan Kellerman et al. BUT, since I have taken time away from them, I will definitely say trilogies. I have been reading a lot of YA, and trilogies are rife in the genre. A lot less commitment is required of a trilogy, plus you have a finite number of books, unlike series, which can keep going for years.

Heroes or villains?

Villains. Without a doubt. And there are so many great ones out there.

A book you want everyone to read?

Reading is so subjective, so I can’t pick one book and say you should read it. It depends on the person and what they like to read. I’ll always suggest reading Harry Potter though!

Recommend an underrated book:

Gosh, this one is a hard question. I was looking at my shelves and I couldn’t actually pick a book, because underrated to me could be widely known and loved somewhere else. I wouldn’t call Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes underrated, but its a book I would always recommend.

The last book you finished?

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. I spotted the movie on tv last week, so I rooted out my copy of the book as a nice light-hearted read.

Weirdest thing you used as a bookmark?

I don’t use weird stuff as bookmarks. I’m firmly of the belief that bookmarks were invented for a reason. I collect them, so I always have bookmarks around.

Used books, yes or no?

YES! Why not? New books are obviously lovely too, but its not always feasible to spend money on them. I am a huge fan of second hand books. I actually have a full Works of Shakespeare book from 1928, and I love it. Used books are always a good choice. I ended up with a first edition of a Harlan Coben book, without realising it, that I bought used for €2!

Top three favourite genres?

YA, fantasy and crime/thriller, in that order now too!

Borrow or buy?

Borrow when possible. I love libraries, so I will always check there first for books before I even think about buying them. I don’t borrow books off friends/family though. Because  have so many myself, but I will let them borrow from me if they see anything they want to read. Except my signed first editions! NOBODY touches those 🙂

Characters or plot?

Initially I would have said plot, but now I think characters. If you don’t engage with a character, you don’t really care whats happening in the plot, so in that sense I’ll have to go with characters.

Short or long book?

Short books. I find long books to be a little daunting while I’m reading. And then I get fixated on how long I have left, so it becomes almost a time management exercise instead, which is no fun!

Long or short chapters?

Short. I love short chapters!

Name the first three books you think of:

Snowblind by Ragnar Jónasson, Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski, Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. If you haven’t heard of them/read them, look them up. They are all fantastic!

Books that make you laugh or cry?

Cry. Which is odd, because I’m not actually a crier. But I would prefer to cry than laugh with a book. Weird, I know.

Our world or fictional worlds?

Fictional worlds. Without a doubt. I could happily live in Flourish and Blotts forever.

Do you ever judge a book by its cover?

ALL THE TIME. I am like a magpie for book covers. I love them. I’ve bought books purely for the cover more times than I care to admit!

Book to movie or book to tv adaptation?

I think I would pick book to movie, only because you can play around with it a bit more. I sound like a broken record, but the Harry Potter movie adaptations are among my most favourite movies. I know they miss out on some things, but I think it was brought to screen really well.

Series or standalone?

Series. I think. Standalones are great, but sometimes I’m left wanting more, and that’s why series are good. The character development and plots can carry on through the books, and the reader becomes more invested with each new book in a series.

First things first, thanks to Kerry at Chat About Books for my nomination 😊

1 – Chips or Jacket potato?

It has to be chips for me! Possibly with some garlic mayo!

2 – Seaside or countryside?

Seaside without a doubt. Nothing sounds better to me than the sound of waves and water.

3 – Do you have a holiday booked? If so, where are you off to?

Sadly not. I’d love to go but it doesn’t seem to want to happen this year, maybe next year!

4 – Do you have pets?

No pets. It’s been a long time since I had any. The last I had were two fish called Google and Zap when our son was a baby! They have gone to the ocean in the sky though!

5 – What’s your favourite sport to play?

Is competitive reading a sport? Because if it is then I’m great at that! 😂  If not, then no sport because it’s just not my thing!

6 – What’s your favourite sport to watch?

I don’t mind watching football. It wasn’t always this way though. Our honeymoon coincided with the 2014 World Cup so we followed the whole thing and I developed quite an interest in it by the end!

7 – Do you have a favourite author?

I have many, and I don’t know how I could possibly just pick one! It wouldn’t be fair to try and narrow it down!

8 – If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would be the first question you would ask them?

Ooh, that’s a tough question. I would quite like to meet JK Rowling. I’m pretty sure I’d lose the power of speech though as I’d be so starstruck. In all likelihood my first question would probably be did I just faint?! 😂

9 – Your favourite restaurant?

It’s called Milano here, but Pizza Express. I could eat their food for the rest of my life and live happily ever after in a food bubble.

10 – Ice-cream or cake?

I would have to say cake. I’m not the biggest fan of ice cream, and I’d never readily choose it of a menu.

25 Random Things about Me

I’ve been thinking about doing a post like this for a while because, let’s face it, unless you’re a family member or friend you don’t really know me.

This is me with my husband (sorry to disappoint, I’m not an eye with a kindle for a face IRL!) 😊

1. What is your middle name?

Margaret (after one of my great grandmothers) and Helena (taken for my confirmation)

2. What is your favorite drink?

Coffee in the morning, tea in the evening, Apple and Blackcurrant Robinsons during the day. Rarely, I might push the boat out and drink a Coke!!!

3. What is your favorite song at the moment?

I don’t have a favourite as such as I don’t have a radio, so rarely hear current music. If I had to pick, it would be either some One Direction (I know!) or a Finnish band called HIM. I’ve loved them since I was 17!

4. What is your favorite food?

This is tough, I’m a sucker for fresh bread with butter. I love all the stuff that’s bad for you to be honest! My husband makes a mean lasagne though!

5. What is the last thing you bought?

Jane Issac’s book The Truth Will Out. My answer was always going to be a book wasn’t it! 😉

6. Favorite book of all time?

The Harry Potter Series will always be my favourite I think. I find it very hard to choose a favourite “grown up” book. Elizabeth Haynes’ Into The Darkest Corner would be on the list for sure though.

7. Favorite Color?

Black. Or Grey!

8. Do you have any pets?

No pets in our house I’m afraid.

9. Favorite Perfume?

Burberry London. The original. The best. The I CAN’T FIND IT ANYMORE!!! 😂

10. Favorite Holiday?

Christmas. I love everything about it. Last year, I was too tired to enjoy it having just had my daughter 10 days previous but I’ll make up for it this year. In 2013 I had 4 Christmas trees up along with mini ones around the house, doubt I’ll get away with that this year! 😉

11. Are you married?

I am, as you can see from my pic above! My husband is the most wonderful, supportive man and the most caring and loving dad to our two children so I’m very lucky.

12. Have you ever been out of the country, if so how many times?

I have. Too many times to count, thanks to holiday-loving parents.

13. Do you speak any other language?

I speak Irish (being from Ireland and all that!), I studied it through college. I also did French in school so I can understand it a bit! I’m also fluent in sarcasm and curse words! 😉

14. How many siblings do you have?

None! I’m an only child!

15. What is your favorite store?

Any and every bookshop I go into. Basically anywhere I can buy books!

16. Favorite restaurant?

We rarely eat in restaurants anymore, but if I had to choose, Milano (Pizza Express in the UK) definitely.

17. When was the last time you cried?

I’m not usually a crier to be honest. I think the last time was watching one of the Harry Potter movies, when a certain character died. Gets me every time.

18. Favorite Blog?

I like any blogs about books so I’m just going to say my fellow #blogsquad members;

Crimebookjunkie Book Blog
Relax And Read Reviews

19. Favorite Movie?
I have loads! Top Gun, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Die Hard, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, to name but a small few!!!

20. Favorite TV show?

I love questions, so The Chase on UTV, and then programmes like CSI, Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, Masterchef.

21. PC or Mac?

I rarely use a computer! I do most of my work on my iPad when I need to.

22. What phone do you have?

iPhone! Surprise surprise!

23. What’s your favourite pastime?

Ammmm, READING!! And blogging about the books I read! 🙂

24. Can you cook?

I can do basic stuff, veg potatoes freezer stuff. I do make a good honey glazed ham though! My husband is much better in the kitchen than me I think!

25. Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

I have my ears pierced. I got my nose pierced when I was younger and it was terrible! It didn’t last long!

I have 7 tattoos so far and all of them mean something to me. I have 2 anchors, two number 13 tattoos, my sons name, INRI, a heartagram (the logo of the band HIM!) and a date. I’m planning on two more that I know of so far, one of which is for my daughter.
